Items

In Elyria items can be looted, destroyed, stolen, recycled, crafted, used up, and more

In Chronicles of Elyria , what you see is what you get. This means that seeing an item carried or worn on a character will be reflected in their inventory. No killing rats and looting armor! No attacking a soldier and being unable to take their sword...if you have time while the fight rages on!

This also holds true when fighting animals. The loot that you can attain will be something that would be realistically attainable from the animals body. For example, a giant brown bear will not yield a pair of chain boots. Rather, you would more likely find hide, meat, bones, teeth, and claws. But without the correct skill to gather the material (skinning or butchering) you will be left staring at a carcass.

This approach provides realism, and not only with loot and resources. It also allows you to size up your opponent while still allowing dramatic tension from the uncertainty of what you might not see. That cloaked figure you're stalking could have a hidden dagger. That lone Canis Rabbit is probably not alone. Do you decide to attack anyway? Because there are no nameplates over NPCs or animals that show their relative level, it'll be up to you to determine if you're up for the challenge.

The Economy of Elyria

Everything in Elyria has a use and a purpose - there is no vendor trash - and the market price will be set by its utility and rarity. Value is determined by the demand, and time will ensure that there will always be demand. The economy of Elyria will depend on recycling of resources and on repair and maintenance. Items will be worn down by time, use, and weather, but many parts are able to be reclaimed and reused again and again. In addition, there are no set spawn points for resource nodes and quantities will be limited. Through player action, natural resources can become depleted, maintained, or even cultivated.

Players are given tools to create custom crafting recipes and patterns, or to research improvements to materials or techniques that can take existing recipes to new heights. Crafting is an essential part of Elyria, so crafters will be in high demand to create the items that Elyrians use everyday, from food and cook pots to clothes and armor.

The Survival Effects of Gear and Equipment

Chronicles of Elyria is a game about stories, not things, so the inventory system needs to support that. Limited inventory creates opportunities for dramatic storytelling, encourages gathering and crafting professions, supports survival mechanics, and promotes trade and mercantilism. It costs money to effectively tow the day's haul from the mines back to town. By encouraging people to invest in pack animals, carts, wagons, and other means of transportation, it drives the player-run economy and player-created quest system. Sometimes it will just be easier to pay someone to get you what you need!

Chronicles of Elyria is unquestionably a survival game. Your character's equipment can impact movement speed, rate of fatigue, and exposure to the elements. It's recommended to bundle up in cold climates to avoid adverse effects. Likewise, wearing too many layers or thick materials can cause similar issues in hot weather! Some tribes may have adaptations that make this easier or harder, depending on the region.
